Meet TROY
Troy, cutter and owner of Troy Rafferty Opals, has over 30 years experience in the opal industry.
Troy started cutting opals professionally when he was just 16 years old. He started out cutting opal in the 1990’s in one of the largest commercial opal cutting workshops in the Sydney CBD. From there, he moved to Brisbane, Queensland to continue working and cutting for another large opal company. He started his own business at 26 years old and moved out to Quilpie, Queensland for two years where he gained a huge amount of on the field experience. Since then he has continued cutting for himself and others, specialising in Boulder opal from the Queensland mining fields.
Over the years Troy has cut an innumerable number of opal stones – well into the tens of thousands – and as such his knowledge of the intricacies of this gemstone and how to draw out the best shape and design from a piece is what sets him apart.
He has experience in all types of opal and aspects of the opal industry, including mining, valuation, buying rough opal and selling wholesale.
Meet the Miners
All Opal sold through Troy Rafferty Opals can be traced back to original mines and miners. We have a wonderful relationship with our mining partners, David and Prue Strang from Strang mine, without whom the majority of these beautiful opals would not be available to the world. We acknowledge the extremely hard work and many hours of labour David and Prue put in to bringing the very best opal to market. All miners that we work with are committed to sustainability practices such as returning the land to the original state after mining is completed at a site.

All opals at Troy Rafferty Opals are hand-cut in house by Troy to create one-of-a-kind pieces.
Our stones are all natural, solid Australian opal so you can be assured of quality. We offer a buyers guarantee and will replace to the best of our ability any cracked or flawed stones due to natural stone processes over the life of your purchase.
